This is the second All-In-Wonder product that I’ve had the pleasure of using, and I have to say that I’m still impressed by the technology that makes the All-In-Wonder series that little bit special. There are many features that set this board above the All-In-Wonder 9800 series, from a multimedia perspective. The board is a good combination of superb multimedia features and mid-range gaming performance.

Looking at the board from a performance perspective, it outperforms any other ATI Radeon 9600-based board on the market; with that said, I can’t really say a great deal more about the performance. The board has serious issues with the lack of memory bandwidth available, which is a combination of both low memory clocks and a 128-bit memory bus. This appears to really hold back the board in today’s most graphic-intense games, where Anti-Aliasing was best to be avoided. This isn’t a board for the hardcore gamer by any stretch of your imagination – upgrading from a Radeon 9200 would be a good move, the addition of DirectX 9.0 support, and performance increases would make this worthwhile.

With ATI’s MultiMedia Center receiving bi-monthly updates, there’s a continuous stream of updated or more substantial features being added in to the All-In-Wonder’s forte. The obvious competitor to this board is the All-In-Wonder 9600 PRO, which is slightly slower than the All-In-Wonder 9600 XT. The XT model takes the whole multimedia experience that little bit further for your money – there’s the welcomed inclusion of Remote Wonder II, which offers a greater operating range and a higher quality feel. The difference in price between the AIW 9600 PRO and the XT model is relatively small. The former is priced around $185 without Remote Wonder, whereas the latter has an MSRP of $199 without the inclusion of a remote control.

Taking this in to account, the All-In-Wonder 9600 XT is currently the best choice in the mid-range multimedia market. It operates at a higher clock frequency than any other 9600-based graphics board, and thus, is the highest-performing Radeon 9600 model. For the price it comes with a very impressive selection of multimedia accessories and features, while offering fairly solid performance in today’s top games at fairly conservative resolutions and detail settings.
